Vedic Meditation is a supremely restful technique practiced by millions of people around the world — a simple, stress-relieving practice that requires no effort, focus, or concentration.

Originating from the Vedic traditions of India (from which yoga and Ayurveda are also derived), VM is practiced with eyes closed for 20 minutes twice-a-day, seated comfortably and with good back support.

While it’s true to say that mindfulness training is a form of meditation, not all traditions of meditation are considered mindfulness — especially as mindfulness is both a practice (or training) and ultimately, a way of being in the world.

Even though VM is not mindfulness, one of the benefits of practicing VM is an increasingly more equanimous and mindful eyes-open state (where mindfulness really counts).

VM + mindfulness (an eyes closed resting technique + an eyes open way of being in the world) becomes a potent combination.

BRADLEY RAIDER is founder and executive director of MDT8 (short for meditate), a global organization that trains individuals and companies to be completely self-sufficient for life in the practice of meditation.
